A small bit of controversy surrounded the girls tennis district tournament this week.
Apparently being the reigning district champions and going undefeated in league the past two seasons was not enough for league coaches to vote Wilsonville’s Kristen Petsche and Allison Petsche as the conference’s No. 1 seed.
Instead, Sherwood’s No. 1 duo of Katie Patterson and Melany Boulton earned the No. 1 seed following the two teams’ dual match on April 28 when the Petsches were moved down to No. 2 to make room for Wilsonville’s No. 2 duo of Taylor Farrell and Taylor Hughes.
The move was made in order to give Farrell and Hughes a chance at the conference’s No. 2 seed at districts, according to Wilsonville coach Mike Farrell.
“I wanted to see how they stacked up but somehow, some of the other coaches viewed that as a sign of weakness in the Petsches instead of what it truly was — to get our No. 2 team an opportunity to compete and show they deserve to be there,” Mike Farrell said. “Maybe a lesson learned from all of us.”
However, Farrell believes the seeding ultimately gave the Petsches extra motivation to defend their district championship in doubles heading into the district tournament that concludes Thursday at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation Center.
“I think partly (the coaches) have done us a favor and they lit a fire under the Petsches,” Farrell said. “And since that seeding meeting, the Petsches really have a chip on their shoulder and have something to prove and they’ve been playing great tennis.”
The Petsches started out strong on Monday, winning their first-round match, 6-0-, 6-0.
Hughes and Taylor Farrell ended up as the district’s No. 3 seed and won their first-round match, 6-1, 6-2.
The Wildcats also provided one of the early shockers when the duo of Caroline Miolla and Cortney Wikle defeated the No. 4 seed of seniors Kimmy Adams and Anne McCreery of Sherwood, 6-2, 6-3.
“That was really inspiring for the team,” Mike Farrell said.
Wilsonville’s fourth doubles team is Catherine Miolla and Amber Carney, who also won on day one, 6-0, 6-0.
In singles, the Wildcats could be even better, holding three of the top five seeds led by freshman Abby Farrell, who is seeded No. 2, and won her first-round matchup on Monday.
No. 3 seed Shannon Cassidy and No. 5 seed Alisha Hansen - both seniors — also won on day one, while the Wildcats’ fourth singles player, Hilary Parmeter, fell in the first round.
Cassidy will look to make her return to the 5A state tournament.
“I like our chances to get at least three singles players through to state,” Mike Farrell said. “And I like our chances with at least two and possibly three doubles teams. Obviously, the matches get a little more difficult from this point forward.”
The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to the state tournament. The district tournament concludes on Thursday at 4 p.m.
