The following two week are what the Wilsonville track and field teams have been building toward all season long.
The Wildcats will look to qualify as many entrants to the 5A state meet, beginning with the preliminaries on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Helens High School. The district finals take place on Friday at 4 p.m.
The Wilsonville boys finished the league dual season 6-1 to take second behind Glencoe at 7-0. The girls team finished 4-3 in league duals to tie with St. Helens for third.
At last season's district meet, the Wilsonville boys finished fourth as St. Helens reigned as district champions.
However, it could change this season with the Wildcats holding several of the top times and marks and should contend to score in every event.
Wilsonville will be led by senior Jesse Staub, who is the defending district champion in the shot put, discus and javelin. This season, Staub has continued his stellar high school career as he holds the conference's top mark in the discus (167 feet, 5 inches) and javelin (208-3), and is second in the shot put (53-0) by less than two feet to Century senior Jordan Seitz (54-6 ¼).
Senior Sean MacKelvie is also a top contender for the Wildcats to reach state as he holds top marks in the javelin (second, 190-6), high jump (second, 6-2), triple jump (second, 42-10 ½), long jump (sixth, 20-3) and the 110-meter high hurdles (third, 15.94 seconds).
Other top contenders to watch for include junior Taylor Bullock in the 400 (second, 52.24), 200 (fifth, 23.37) and 300 intermediate hurdles (second, 41.95), and Trevor Kouchi in the pole vault (third, 12-0).
Wilsonville's 4x400 relay consisting of Bullock, Kouchi, Michael MacKelvie and Jose Secundio should also be in the mix as it holds the top time in the conference at 3:32.79.
On the girls side, sprints should be the Wildcats' strength led by junior Kelsey Starr, who holds the conference's top times this season in the 100 (12.51), 200 (26.23) and 400 (60.61). Starr also has the third highest mark in the long jump this season at 15-6 ½.
Senior Tessa Scott is also a top contender with the conference's best time in the 1,500 (5:05.61) and among the top in the 800 (second, 2:25.0) and 3,000 (third, 1:19.47).
Senior Catherine Street holds the top mark in the pole vault at 11-6 and is the favorite to win the event, junior Laura Hanson will contend in the javelin (second, 118-0) and freshman Kaila Bistolas has the third highest mark in the league in the triple jump (32-7).
Wilsonville’s 4x400 relay of Scott, Bistolas, Street and Kaitlyn Giles are second in the league at 4:21.73 — less than four-tenths behind St. Helens at 4:21.38.
