Expect a white Christmas!

If you’re snowed in, don’t expect to make it out any time soon! The snow is here to stay, and more is falling.

According to a hazardous weather outlook and a winter advisory issued by the National Weather Service, snow showers will bring an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow throughout the day. Additional snow is possible throughout Wednesday and Thursday morning. As of Monday morning, about 11.5 inches of snow had accumulated in the Portland area.

The snowstorm is being referred to as the most severe in Oregon since the January 1969 deluge, in which two to three feet of snow fell in most areas of the state over six days. Hundreds of farm buildings and several large industrial buildings collapsed under the weight of the heavy wet snow, and there were significant losses in livestock, according to the National Weather Advisory. Total Oregon losses from the snowstorm were estimated between $3 million and $4 million.

Drivers should use extreme caution when navigating the roads. Chains, not just traction tires, are being required in many parts of the Portland metro area.
