“The Parent and the Teen: Preparing Yourself for Independence” will be taught by parent and teen life coach Mark C. Hughes, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at The Celebration Church, 25030 S.W. Parkway Avenue, Wilsonville. The workshop introduces parents to simple but powerful principles that prepare teens to make better decisions, keep their agreements and learn the importance of responsibility. Want to get published, but don’t know where to start? The NW Association of Book Publishers is offering several classes through its Web site www.nwabp.org. The first session, titled “Publishing 101 – From an Idea to a Book,” will be on Saturday, May 17. It includes information on publishing models, literary agents, today’s marketplace and the business of publishing. “Marketing 101- The 4 ‘Ps’ of Marketing” begins after lunch and includes information on why you must know about marketing prior to writing your book. The full day is priced from just $69 with the half-day sessions even less.
Natural and human forces have been shaping the Willamette Valley for thousands of years. Friends of Historic Champoeg will explore how these forces have intersected to create the landscape we have today in the program, “Fires, Floods and Farming,” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Champoeg Visitor Center. Kids can get their hands dirty and learn how to plant seeds in the annual free hands-on event for kids ages 12 and younger at Margie’s Buds and Blooms, 12433 Arndt Road NE, Aurora. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 17. Kids will be provided with a free seedling to transplant into a four-inch container along with instructions on how to care for the plant. The second annual Build-A-Barn Dinner and Auction will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, 694 N.E. Fourth Avenue, Canby, inside the Event Center Main Pavilion. The event is a fundraiser planned by the Clackamas County Fair Improvement Foundation to build a Multi-purpose facility to replace the fairgrounds’ current 1920’s-era livestock barn. The event will start with cocktails, with a prime rib dinner at 7 p.m. The oral auction follows. Items up for auction include an aerial tour of the Columbia River Gorge and vacation packages.

Author Susan Fletcher will tell of her five-year odyssey to write “Alphabet Dreams,” her young adult novel about a boy who has prophetic dreams, the teenage sister who tries to protect him, and a suspense-filled camel caravan journey across ancient Persia, from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the Oak Room at Wilsonville Public Library. The 19th annual Tualatin Chamber of Commerce Crawdaddy Open golf tournament will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at the Tualatin Country Club, 9145 S.W. Tualatin Road, Tualatin. Registration opens at 10 a.m., lunch for registered players is at 10:30 a.m.-noon. Following play, there will be a dinner buffet, no-host bar, awards and raffle. Cost is $125 per person. The Conzatti family will perform Celtic, bluegrass, swing, gospel and jazz music at the next Booknotes concert, at 7 p.m. Monday, May 19 at the Wilsonville Public Library.
The band consists of seven children from the Conzatti family who all grew up playing an instrument. As each child came of age, they were introduced to either a stringed instrument or piano lessons. FREE.
